The Kerala High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Sekhar Kumar, an Assistant Director with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), in a case registered against him by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) for allegedly demanding ₹2 crore as bribe through an intermediary from a Kollam-based cashew businessman to extricate him from a money-laundering case.

In his anticipatory bail petition, Mr. Kumar claimed innocence and alleged that he was falsely implicated in the case. He alleged that the case was registered so that the businessman could wriggle out of the probe initiated by the ED against him for allegedly siphoning off ₹24 crore from different people.

Investigation is possible by questioning him without arresting and detaining him in custody, a Bench of Justice A. Badharudeen said, and directed Mr. Kumar to subject himself for interrogation within two weeks.
