The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has urged the authorities to immediately disburse the June 2025 salaries of guest lecturers and administrative staff working in the erstwhile constituent colleges of Bharathidasan University (BDU).
In a representation submitted to the Commissioner of Collegiate Education on July 11, association general secretary K. Raja, said: “Bharathidasan University stopped salary payments without any prior notice from November 2023 to 81 guest/hourly paid lecturers and 28 temporary non-teaching staff employed in the seven erstwhile constituent colleges now functioning as government colleges.
“Despite several representations and protests by AUT, the issue remained unresolved, necessitating legal recourse at the Madurai Bench of the High Court of Madras. As per an interim order, Bharathidasan University disbursed five months’ salary on January 2 and paid salaries for 12 months till April on June 19. It remains unclear whether the salary for June will be disbursed by university or the Higher Education Department,” said the petition.
The association has asked BDU to pay ₹25,000 a month to all guest/hourly paid lecturers in line with government norms, along with all pending arrears. It urged the university to revise the wages of temporary non-teaching staff in accordance with current standards.
Guest lecturers in government colleges are paid ₹25,000 a month. However, similarly placed faculty under BDU have received only ₹16,000 while temporary lab assistants and junior assistants have been paid ₹11,200 a month. The petition added that the daily pay rate of ₹633 for temporary staff needs revision.
“The Government should take direct responsibility for the regular salary disbursement to the 109 affected teaching and non-teaching staff,” said the association in its petition.
