The State police have rescued a doctor who was made to believe he was under digital arrest and forced to transfer ₹2.90 crore to cyber criminals.

In a press release, the Cyber Crime Wing of the Tamil Nadu police said the State Cyber Command Centre as part of its pre-emptive approach in identifying victims of cyber frauds found the victim trapped in the clutches of the accused persons. The conmen made him believe they were calling from the Mumbai Cyber Crime police station and investigating a cyber fraud.

Realising the doctor was being exploited, a special team rushed to his house. However, the victim refused to open the door thinking he was still under digital arrest. “After two hours of convincing, the victim realised he was defrauded. Following this, a formal complaint was registered by the Cyber Crime Police, and an investigation is currently underway…,” the release said adding the timely intervention had prevented the victim from transferring more funds to the fraudsters.
