Six arrested for cheating in Namakkal

The Namakkal District police arrested six persons in connection with a cheating case on Monday evening (July 14, 2025).

Siva Shanmugam (35), a resident of Vadaikaraiyathur near Jedarpalayam, had divorced his first wife and decided to get married through a marriage broker. When he contacted the marriage broker named Tamil Selvi (45), a resident of Paramathi Velur, she introduced some other people to him and received ₹1.20 lakh as a brokerage commission.

On July 7, he got married to Jothi, alias Jothi Lakshmi (23), of Madurai district. On the next day of marriage, she went missing from the house. When he came to know that he was cheated, Siva Shanmugam ended his life on July 10.

The Nallur police inquired and found that Jothi was already married and had two children. Through brokers, she used to marry and loot money and jewellery from the house and flee. The police registered a case and arrested Jothi and the brokers Tamil Selvi (45), Kasthuri Pandi (38), a resident of Sivakasi; Velmurugan (55), a resident of Kovilpatti; Muthu Lakshmi (45), a resident of Sivaganga, and Shankar alias Narayanan (56), a resident of Tiruchi district. They were then remanded in prison.
