The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) plans to construct the Kaivannam Sathukkam (Chennai Craft Bazaar) on a land parcel in Koyambedu owned by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). The project was announced in the 2024-25 Tamil Nadu Budget Session. The estimated project cost is ₹40 crore.

The complex will include dedicated spaces for shops and commercial stalls, a multipurpose hall, an art gallery, and zones for live demonstrations and workshops. Also, a children’s park, food court, restaurant, souvenir shop, and additional retail outlets are to come up. Further, service infrastructure include toilet blocks for men and women, lift access, car parking, a first-aid room, and a diesel generator set.

The facility is expected to come up near the Koyambedu Metro Station and the bus terminus to improve visitor access, according to CMDA.

The tender for the construction of the project has been floated and work should be completed within nine months of site handover. The contractor must adhere to the Tamil Nadu Building Practice, Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges, and other applicable codes, the Authority stated.
