The agreement for setting up a compressed biogas plant at Njeliyanparamba in Kozhikode city will be signed later this month.
This was decided at a special meeting of the Kozhikode Corporation Council chaired by Mayor Beena Philip on Wednesday (July 16, 2025). The State government, Kozhikode Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) will enter into the agreement, with BPCL responsible for setting up the plant. Corporation Secretary K.U. Bini said construction work would begin soon. BPCL will also take steps to ensure the safety of the plant.
The Corporation will hand over seven acres for the facility, where 150 tonnes of biowaste will be processed. There will be a fuel station attached to the plant. The construction is expected to be completed in two years.
Sources said that biowaste collected from various wards by the Haritha Karma Sena would be sent to the plant. The biogas generated there would be sold to Gas Authority of India Limited. The estimated cost of the project is ₹99 crore. Around six tonnes of biogas is expected to be generated.
