Movement of paddy from the direct purchase centres to the godowns and rice mills in Tiruvarur district was hit as the lorry owners in Mannargudi region halted the operation of their vehicles.
According to sources, lorry owners’ association in Mannargudi region demanded an increase in the transportation charges offered to them by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation. As the talks between them and the Corporation officials, which began on July 1, failed they decided to halt the operation of their vehicles.
Movement of paddy procured and stacked at the DPCs to the godowns and rice mills in the district was affected from July 16 night onwards, sources said.
Meanwhile, inquiries with the officials revealed that the Corporation was looking for alternatives while carrying on the talks with the agitating lorry owners.
