In a move to strengthen workplace safety, the Joint Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Tiruchi, R. Vimala, has issued a directive to all factories and establishments engaged in building and other construction work in Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Karur districts to comply with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
All employers in the construction sector should immediately constitute an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at their workplaces to address grievances related to sexual harassment. According to the Act, setting up a committee is mandatory, and failure to comply can result in penalties of up to ₹50,000, she said.
Employers have been instructed to display the details of ICC members and the grievance redress mechanism in prominent locations within the factory premises so they are easily visible to all employees.
Additionally, Ms. Vimala referred to the government’s latest guidelines, issued through G.O.(MS) No. 64 of the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment (SW3-2) department of June 18, 2025, which lay out standard operating procedures for handling sexual harassment complaints. All establishments are instructed to strictly adhere to these procedures.
