Fishermen of 10 hamlets from Nochikuppam to Srinivasapuram urged the government to withdraw ‘false’ cases booked against 26 persons in their community.
A meeting of village representatives resolved on Thursday that unless the cases are withdrawn, the villages will not provide any support during Ganesh Chaturthi and during the monsoon. The cases were filled on four women and 22 men. They alleged that it had been shown as if the fishermen had made some malicious remarks about two MLAs Abdul Samad and Dha Velu at routine weekly meetings held in the villages.
“We did not say or do anything wrong during our meetings, which are apolitical in nature. Also, Mr. Samad who visited us recently, said he had no issues with the fishermen. It looks like they want us to stop holding the meetings,” said K. Bharathi, a community leader.
