The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Friday urged the State government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Dharmasthala burials case.
DYFI State president Lavitra Vastrad and Basavaraja Pujar, the DYFI State secretary, stated in a release that the SIT probe should be conducted under the supervision of a sitting or retired Supreme Court Judge.
āPeople have the right to know the truth behind Dharmasthala burials,ā they said.
If the Congress government did not will to probe the case deeply, and even an SIT probe will not help in delivering justice to the families of victims. Constituting an SIT to investigate the alleged rape and murder of Soujanya, a pre-university student, in Dharmasthala did not help much in bringing out the truth, they said.
The DYFI stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should refrain from his emotional attachment to Dharmasthala and prioritise obtaining justice for the victims.
On July 3, a person filed a complaint with Dharmasthala police claiming that he was forced to bury the bodies of many persons, including women and men, who were allegedly murdered and raped in Dharmasthala. He claimed that he buried the bodies during his tenure as a sanitation worker in Dharmasthala between 1995 and December 2014. After obtaining permission from the court, the Dharmasthala police registered a case on July 4 for an offence under Section 211(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. On July 11, the complainant produced some of the skeletal remains of a body, which he claimed to have exhumed himself, before the Principal Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate First Class of the Belthangady court, and gave a statement regarding the same.
