The Government Railway Police conducted awareness programme on safety among school children and women passengers on board the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam passenger train on Friday.

About 150 Kindergarten students and teachers of GKD Higher Secondary School were taken in the train from Periyanaickenpalayam to Mettupalayam Railway Station and orientated on ‘good touch, bad touch’, while women passengers were urged to derive utmost utility of an exclusive WhatsApp Group created for their safety from harassment, Sub-Inspector of Police, Mettupalayam, D. Manoharan, said.

Pamila, general secretary, CAMIA Foundation, Karamadai, engaged the students and teachers in the awareness initiative.

Director General of Police K. Vannia Perumal had issued a directive to field-level officials to conduct safety programmes at periodic intervals, under the supervision of Inspector General of Police A.G. Babu, and Superintendent of Police, Chennai District L. Eswaran.

About five such programmes have been conducted during this year in the Coimbatore Circle with the participation of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Range, Babu, and Inspector of Coimbatore Circle, Meenakshi, the programme organisers said.

The Government Railway Police personnel have been reaching out to students in colleges as well in the districts of Coimbatore and The Nilgiris to create awareness on hazard of drug abuse, sources added.
