The State government has given the administrative sanction for extension of the metro corridor from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram. The Phase II corridor was initially planned to run from Light House to Poonamalle. The government order comes in the wake of the State government sanctioning the extension of the metro Phase I corridor from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam on Wednesday. The phase I extension project has been allotted ₹1,964 crore. 

In the G.O. issued on Thursday, the State government has directed the Chennai Metro Rail limited (CMRL) for carrying out the preparatory works of land acquisition, road works and other items of works. The extension project costing ₹2,126 crore would have a corridor length of 27.90 km from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram. 

The extension project would have 14 stations including Nazarathpet, Chembarambakkam, Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus, Samathuvapuram, Chettipedu, Thandalam, SIPCOT Irungattukottai, Pennalur, Sriperumbudur, Pattunool Chatram, Irungulam Industrial Area, Mambakkam, Thirumangalam, and Sunguvarchatram. 

Of the ₹2,126 crore allotted for the project, about ₹1,836 crore has been assigned for land acquisition. .
