Bad service roads

The service roads on both the sides of the Crawford road over bridge are in very bad condition. The portion of the road was dug for the underground drainage scheme works. After the completion of the works, they have not been relaid.I urge the authorities to relay the service roads at the earliest.

The roads to Kozhinjipatti from Vadamalipatti and Karikali in Thathaiyengarpet union in Musiri taluk are in bad condition.  Residents have to walk one kilometer to Karikali to board buses. I request the  authorities to blacktop the two roads.

Despite the efforts of the Corporation, Tiruchi is ranked 49 out of 95 this year in the 3-10 lakhs population tier 2 cities under the Swachh Survekshan rankings. One feels, it should have been much higher. But the reasons are not far to seek. The Uyyakondan canal has become an eyesore. The river Cauvery is also subject to pollution near the Amma Mandapam and Chintamani bathing ghats. The onus is on the civic authorities to take steps to improve the city’s ranking.

Central bus stand

The news coverage by The Hindu on the Panjapur Integrated Bus Terminus becoming operational and the Central bus stand wearing an empty look brought nostalgic memories of the central bus stand. Shuttle services should be operated between Panjapur and the Central Bus Stand/ Railway Junction round-the-clock so that passengers need not shell out exorbitant money for auto fares.

No storm water drain

The SBI Staff Colony at Crawford, one of the earliest colonies since 1969, is languishing without a storm water drain and underground sewer system. Pending commissioning of the underground drainage scheme, I request the civic authorities to provide storm water drains in the three streets in the colony as the residents find it difficult to dispose off waste water.

Postal woes

We depend and trust India Posts Speed Post for sending valuable and personal articles, rather than private courier services. But unfortunately the Speed Post Tracking system is not updated promptly. This is very discouraging and needs the attention of concerned people at the top level of the Department of Posts.

Fare concessions

The cost of extending Railway fare concessions to senior citizens will not be very high. But the beneficiaries will be more. It is the bounden duty of the government to restore the benefit to the elderly citizens. It is disheartening to note that the Railway and Finance ministries are adamant and not considering the repeated representations of various fora.

Monkey menace

The monkey menace is a growing problem in both,  rural and urban areas in Tiruchi district. They often  raid crops and houses and even attack children, women and elders. The problem needs the attention of the authorities.

Smaller notes

These days ATM machines are dispensing only â‚č500 denomination currencies. It is understood only  higher value notes are loaded due to paucity of space. But every individual needs currencies in small denomination notes for day-to-day transactions. It is pathetic to see senior citizens and housewives being put to much hardship in getting currencies of smaller denominations. Banks may think of setting up a few kiosks for issuing small denomination notes in addition to their existing ATM machines.

God response

I had highlighted in these columns that two wheelers are parked in front of a liquor outlet near the No.1Tollgate Bus Stop in Tiruchi, hindering the movement of traffic ,especially in the evenings. I thank the Kollidam  Police Station authorities for regularly patrolling this area daily in the evenings now.

Scholl breaks

The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to ring ‘water bells’ at 11.00 am, 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm every day in schools for a small break to keep students hydrated shows its concern for their health. However, instead of three times, the middle break can be avoided as it coincides roughly with lunch breaks in all schools.

Clean water in schools

Students need to be provided with clean water at schools in Thanjavur district. Schools that lack proper drinking water supply or with dilapidated infrastructure should get immediate attention and be provided with water purification systems.

 Expedite work

Pits have been dug near the roundabout at Four Road junction in Budalur to erect a bus shelter.  The underground drinking water pipelines were damaged, affecting supply to residents of Budalur. Residents are getting intermittent water supply from the day the work started. I request the authorities concerned to speed up the work and ensure regular water supply.
