With the establishment of a war room at the district hospital, the Health and Family Welfare Department has taken the initiative to deal with dengue cases in Yadgir district in Karnataka.
Two medical staff have been posted in the war room to monitor the patients with a travel history and the treatment being provided to them. They will also advise them about precautions.
“This is the routine process that the department takes up every year between June and September. This period is considered as the most crucial one to attack dengue,” said Sajid, District Prevention Officer of Vector Borne Diseases.
On the other hand, the department conducted medical examinations of the sample collected from suspected patients to ascertain the disease.
“As many as 1,364 samples have been tested since January, of which 27 were confirmed with the dengue disease,” he said.
The department observed a dengue-free month in July, and spread awareness about dengue preventive methods.
ASHA workers visit houses every Friday and conduct a larvae survey. They take action to destroy such larvae to prevent spread of the disease.
As per the guidelines issued by the government of Karnataka, in a house wherein two cases of dengue are reported, such a house will be called a hotspot. Officers will be distributing neem oil to the patients to apply on the body to avoid possible mosquito bites.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The person, after being bitten by infected mosquitoes, will suffer fever, headache, and body pain.
“People should maintain cleanliness of their surroundings and keep cleaning stored water. They must ensure that old unused tires, coconut shells, and other things where mosquitoes lay eggs are not placed near houses,” Dr. Sajid said.
In 2023, 93 cases of dengue were reported after testing of 2,856 samples. In 2024, 137 cases were positive after testing of 4,746 samples. In 2025 (till date), 27 cases reported positive after testing of 1,290 samples.
