A Tahsildar in Kadavur taluk was arrested by officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 to process a correction in a birth certificate.
V. Revathi, a daily wage construction labourer from Veeranampatti village, had approached the Kadavur Tahsildar’s office to correct the spelling of her daughter’s name in her birth certificate. Despite applying for the correction more than a year ago, no action was taken.
Revathi’s husband Velmurugan is visually challenged, and the family was dependent on Revathi’s earnings for their livelihood. After repeated follow-ups, Tahsildar Soundaravalli K.R. allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹5,000 to process the long-pending correction.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, Revathi approached the Karur unit of the DVAC and lodged a complaint. Based on the complaint, DVAC officials laid a trap. On Wednesday, as Revathi handed over the marked currency notes to the Tahsildar, officials caught Soundaravalli red-handed. She was arrested and remanded to custody.
