Opposition protests continued to stall Lok Sabha proceedings for the fourth straight day this Monsoon Session as the Lower House was adjourned until 2 p.m., a few minutes after convening on Thursday (July 24, 2025). Opposition members protested demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission of India (ECI), ahead of the Assembly elections there.

Opposition resorted to sloganeering and loud protests demanding a discussion on Bihar SIR. Several members gathered at the Well of the House, shouting slogans and displaying placards.

Speaker Om Birla objected to the display of placards inside the House and asked the protesting to return to their seats. He also tried appealing to Congress leader K.C. Venugopal against the show of placards and protests in the Well of the House.

Mr. Birla’s repeated appeals against the protests and show of placards failed. He said that the actions does not suit the “dignity of the House” and said that it sent out a wrong message to the public. As the protests continued, he adjourned the House till 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, all notices under Rule 267, demanding discussions on various issues, were rejected by Deputy Chairman Harivansh. The Upper House bid farewell to six members from Tamil Nadu — M.M. Abdullah, N. Chandrasekaran, Anbumani Ramdoss, M. Shanmugam, Vaiko and P Wilson — who are retiring. Also, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, known for handling the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack trials, took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President on July 13.

Following the farewell to retiring members, Opposition members began their protest as soon as Question Hour was taken up and Mr. Harivansh, in the Chair, adjourned the House till 2 p.m.
