The Motor Vehicles department (MVD) has deployed three enforcement squads on the Kozhikode-Kuttiady route to keep an eye on private bus operators who flout road safety rules and engage in dangerous road racing. The action comes in the wake of the death of a college student at Perambra after being knocked down by a speeding private bus.
MVD sources said that the squads would carry out regular flash checks covering accident-prone areas and report details to the higher authorities. They added that the buses involved in frequent accidents would be blacklisted as part of the heightened surveillance measures.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Perambra) N. Sunil Kumar said that a meeting of the traffic regulatory committee would be held in Perambra on Saturday (July 26) to discuss and implement further traffic safety measures. Complaints related to illegal parking and other issues raised by bus operators as reasons for increasing accidents would be discussed, he said.
“Complaints against a few private auditorium owners for their failure to provide independent parking facilities for guests have already been forwarded to the Revenue Divisional Officer,” said Mr. Sunil Kumar.
In the light of complaints by bus operators about “careless operation” of driving school buses during peak hours, the police said that driving instructors would be asked to use less congested rural roads.
A senior police officer said the proposal for police clearance certificates for private bus drivers would be implemented strictly on the Kozhikode-Kuttiady route after receiving the government order in that regard. “Though the bus operators are against the proposed rule, it may become a mandatory requirement from August 2025,” he added.
