Surplus water was released from the Bhavanisagar Dam in Erode district after the reservoir reached its full level of 100.04 ft at around 10 a.m. on Saturday (July 27, 2025).
According to the Water Resources Department, the dam is storing 28.75 tmc ft of water against its total capacity of 32.8 tmc ft. The inflow at the time of full reservoir level was recorded at 20,427 cusecs.
As of Saturday morning (July 26, 2025), a total of 9,705 cusecs was released from the dam. Of this, 9,700 cusecs has been discharged into the Bhavani River, while five cusecs has been diverted into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal.
Officials said the volume of discharge into the river may be increased further depending on subsequent inflows, with the potential to reach up to 25,000 cusecs. People residing in low-lying areas and along the banks of the Bhavani River have been advised to relocate to safer areas. The district administration has been instructed to implement all precautionary measures to ensure public safety and protect property.
In view of the increased water flow, public access to the Kodiveri Anicut has been restricted until further orders. The Water Resources Department has imposed a ban on bathing, fishing and the operation of coracles in the Bhavani River.
