A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a video on X, purportedly showing injuries suffered by a toddler, and condemned the Delhi police for “brutally beating up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda’s Chanchal”, the police on Monday termed the video fake.

In a video statement on X, DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania said the woman, identified as Sanjanu Parveen, alleged that she and her son were beaten up by the police on the directions of a “politically connected relative from Malda” in West Bengal.

The officer said that based on the West Bengal Chief Minister’s X post, multiple teams were constituted to identify the woman, who was subsequently traced and interrogated.

“In her confession during the interrogation, the woman mentioned that her relative, who lives in Malda, is a political worker, and at his request, she made this baseless video and shared it with him. Later, her relative circulated the same video to the local media,” the DCP said.

The officer added that the video was made to “tarnish the image of Delhi Police”.

Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in W.B. Suvendu Adhikari said the woman had claimed that four individuals claiming to be from the police had visited her home on July 25, accused her family of being undocumented Bangladeshi citizens, and forcibly taken her, along with her two children, to a park in Mangolpuri the next day.

‘Clear inconsistencies’

“However, the CCTV footage [near her house] clearly reveals inconsistencies. It clearly shows her leaving home with her children alone, which contradicts the claim of the use of force,” said Mr. Adhikari.

He added, “Many such fake stories will be spread. So this time, don’t just listen and believe in whatever you see.”
