The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a special monsoon sanitation drive from Tuesday ( July 29, 2025) which would continue up to August 8, with the objective of addressing monsoon-related challenges.
The intensive drive will aim at removal of legacy waste, Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris, green waste, and residual waste from various engineering and urban biodiversity operations, as per a press release. It also targets GVP (Garbage Vulnerable Points) clearance, C&D debris removal, silt deposition cleanup due to recent rains, and seasonal disease prevention. The special drive will take place from 5.30 am to 1.30 pm, in addition to regular sanitation efforts.
As part of the drive, GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan undertook an early morning inspection in the Charminar and LB Nagar Zones, accompanied by senior municipal officials.
The inspection commenced at the City College Junction, where the commissioner personally interacted with sanitation workers and monitored sweeping operations. He later moved to Chaitanyapuri, where he reviewed garbage collection mechanisms and emphasised on efficient waste handling systems.
At Vanasthalipuram, the commissioner inspected hygiene and health practices at a local tea stall, stressing the importance of public food safety. As part of the monsoon action plan, stormwater drains were inspected to ensure functionality and prevention of urban flooding.
He also inspected the historic Sardar Mahal and the Old Bus Stand area near Charminar to assess civic infrastructure, sanitation arrangements, and ongoing heritage restoration initiatives. The inspection was accompanied by MLA Zulfiqar Ali, MLC Rahmat Baig, and senior GHMC officials.
Mr. Karnan directed officials to expedite heritage conservation works at Sardar Mahal and stressed the importance of a balanced approach in upgrading infrastructure without compromising on heritage value.
