In another incident of alleged hooliganism, two emergency on-duty doctors were physically assaulted by persons accompanying a critical patient to GBP Hospital in the early hours of Sunday (August 3, 2025). While the matter was reported to the police, they did not act in accordance with the law and returned without detaining the accused, a protesting doctor alleged.
The incident occurred when family members rushed Bimal Sarkar, a resident of Narayanpur locality, to the hospital after he reportedly consumed Paraquat mixed with alcohol. The patient was immediately admitted to the emergency medicine ward and was administered all emergency treatment.
There were three doctors on duty in the emergency section at the time, attending to all incoming cases. A doctor said that the hospital, the only referral facility in the State, had received a total of 110 emergency patients from across Tripura till late Saturday (August 2, 2025) night.
Of the three doctors, Dr. Litan Das and Dr. Abhik Deb were physically assaulted and verbally abused by the patient’s attendants. Dr. Das was reportedly the main target, as he was attending to the patient.
Security staff from a private agency are deployed in the emergency and other departments of the GBP Hospital, but they are frequently criticised for not responding promptly to doctors’ calls for assistance.
Incidents of doctors, particularly those posted in the emergency department, being manhandled have been reported over the years. In several such cases, police action against the perpetrators has reportedly been lacking.
