Two persons drowned in River Cauvery in separate incidents in the district on Sunday evening.
The deceased were identified as R. Ranjithkumar (21), a resident of Ramamoorthy Nagar near P.N. Patti, and M. Balasubramaniam (44), a resident of Salem Camp near Mettur.
Ranjithkumar, a construction worker, drowned while bathing in the river near his house on Sunday evening. On information, Mettur Fire and Rescue Service retrieved the body and sent it to Mettur Government Hospital for postmortem. The Karumalaikoodal police registered a case.
M. Balasubramaniam, also a construction worker, drowned while bathing near the surplus sluices at Mettur Dam. Local residents rushed him to Mettur Government Hospital, but he died on the way to hospital. The Mettur police registered a case and are investigating further.
