The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday announced that it will provide additional resources to animal birth control (ABC) centres to conduct sterilisation of stray dogs and launch a zone-wise anti-rabies awareness campaign in the Capital in an attempt to tackle the stray dog menace.
A statement from the civic body’s Standing Committee chairperson, Satya Sharma, said that the ABC centres will be given the facility to implant microchips in stray canines to record details of their sterilisation status and other vital information, enabling effective monitoring and tracking in the future.
“At the same time, zone-wise anti-rabies awareness camps will also be organised to educate people and ensure protection against the disease,” it added. Ms. Sharma said that the corporation aims to adopt a holistic approach to strike a balance between animal welfare and public health.
In a statement last week, following the Supreme Court taking cognisance of a report about dog attacks leading to rabies in the Capital, MCD said it has intensified efforts to sterilise stray dogs in order to check their growing count.
