The Delhi government is awaiting the Centre’s nod to resume construction on the remaining section of the Pragati Maidan tunnel, which will link Bhairon Marg with Ring Road, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Monday.
He added that the government had completed all formalities, including technical reviews, and submitted the proposal to the Centre seeking its nod to resume work on the 28-metre section of the underpass.
The section, which is part of the Pragati Maidan transit corridor, aims to decongest traffic near Pragati Maidan by providing an alternative route for commuters travelling from central Delhi to Sarai Kale Khan, Ashram, and adjoining areas on the Ring Road.
“Construction on the section was halted in 2023 after precast concrete boxes sank due to floods. The engineering challenges combined with the sensitivity of working under live railway lines demanded expert intervention,” read a statement issued by the Minister’s office. It added that the government intends to allow only light motor vehicles to ply on the Bhairon Marg-Ring Road section.
“We consulted top institutions, including CBRI (Central Building Research Institute), IIT, Delhi, and IIT, Bombay, to find a viable and safe solution and based on their recommendations, we have proposed to employ the cast-in situ construction method, which avoids disturbing the railway tracks and minimises ground risks,” said Mr. Singh. He said that upon receiving the approval, the Delhi government will resume work on the stretch after the monsoon.
