Heavy early-morning showers left many vulnerable stretches in Kochi city and Ernakulam district in Kerala inundated even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a red alert for Ernakulam on Tuesday (August 5, 2025).
Among the affected areas were Stadium Link Road, MG Road, St. Vincent Road, Azad Road, Judges Avenue, Panampilly Nagar, Ernakulam South, KSRTC Stand, Kathrikadavu, Thammanam, and Vennala. Many areas in the neighbouring municipalities of Maradu and Kalamassery were also affected by the heavy rain, which continued almost incessantly since late Monday night.

Heavy rains have lashed Kochi city and its surrounding areas since the early hours of Tuesday. The downpour has also disrupted waste evacuation, as municipal workers struggle to clean the city.

In Pettah, a car from an online cab aggregator accidentally drove into a canal as the separation from the adjacent road disappeared beneath the floodwaters. The driver who had come to pick up a customer managed to open the door and escape even as the car was completely submerged. Efforts were under way to tow the car out of the waters. The incident took place along the boundary of the Maradu municipality and the Kochi Corporation.
Students had a difficult time due to the heavy rains.
âAreas near the Kaloor stadium and Stadium Link Road have been badly affected. Water entered some houses in Shanthipuram Colony as well, though the affected families are reluctant to move out,â said George Nanatt, councillor of Karanakkodam division.
Edappally Junction was flooded due to the ongoing national highway expansion works. Things were no different at the nearby Toll Junction either.
Ernakulam South division councillor Padmaja S. Menon said that a petrol pump near the KSRTC stand had not been repaired yet, making things worse in the area.
Dhanalakshmi, a resident of P&T Colony at Mundamveli, rued how the families in the apartment complex have been left to live in leaky flats. Authorities had promised to complete the truss work to fix the leakage at the earliest, but have not done anything yet, she said.
In Kalamassery municipality, 30-odd houses along V.R. Thankappan Road were in danger of inundation with the waters reaching up to the doorsteps. âIf the rain continues, even more houses will be affected. Families in divisions 29 and 30 have long been living in constant fear of flooding during every rain,â said V.P. Siyad, a resident.
