Auto driver arrested on the charge of killing woman in Belagavi

Belagavi Police arrested a 38-year-old auto driver on the charge of killing a woman in the city on Wednesday.

Santosh Jadhav from Veerabhadra Nagar was arrested for killing his 42-year-old acquaintance Mahadevi Bhagappa Kariyananavar of Sadashiv Nagar. She used to work as a cook in a mess.

The accused, it is said, gave her ₹10,000 loan a year ago. However, she failed to repay it in time.

On Tuesday night, he took her to the road outside Lakshmi Complex in Sadashiv Nagar. They had an altercation over the money. He hit her on the head with a rod. She collapsed and bled to death.

“Our officers have solved the case in a few hours. Further investigation is on,” Police Commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabrao told reporters here on Wednesday.

“The police control room got a call at around 10 p.m. that there was a body lying on the road. A team of officers led by Deputy Commissioners of Police Narayan Baramani and Niranjan Raje Urs rushed to the spot. Officers who handle scene of crime, fingerprint officers and a dog squad were summoned. Evidence was collected from the spot,” he said.

“Our officers traced the accused using human and technical intelligence. They have done a commendable job,” the Police Commissioner said.

He said that a strong set of evidence, including some eyewitnesses, have been collected.

He gave away cash awards to the investigation team that included Usman Awati and Santosh Satyanayak.
