As many as 30 girl students of Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions’ Society (APSWREIS) Gurukul school at Koduru village in SPSR Nellore district fell ill due to diarrhoea. The students suffered from severe symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting on Monday evening around 4 p.m..

According to the sources, the Gurukul school employees had kept the issue a secret and did not inform the parents. Initially, the treatment was given to the students at Kodur primary health centre (PHC). As the situation worsened, 10 students were rushed to ACSR Government General Hospital (GGH) in Nellore on Tuesday midnight.

Speaking to The Hindu, GGH Superintendent Dr. Kondeti Madhavi said, “Only two students are currently availing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, while the parents of other students have taken them to their homes. The condition of these two girls is better now and they may get discharged in a couple of days.”

“Presently, the two sick students are under constant supervision of the Gurukul teachers. They are recovering fast, but we have kept them in the ICU to prevent any infection. They complained that they were given stale food. However, water contamination may also lead to diarrhoea,” she said.
