Velammal MHSS (Chennai) with 16 points won the FIDE World Schools Team chess championship held in Alexandria, USA on Thursday. Kazakhstan’s National School of Physics and Mathematics (12) and USA’s The Harker School (USA) (12) came second and third respectively.
The triumphant team members, coached by non-playing captain S. Velavan, were: WFM Keerti Shree Reddy, IM S. Aswath, FM Daakshin Arun, IM A.R. Ilamparithi, FM K.P. Pranav. Pranav, playing as a reserve on board five, scored full points out of eight rounds.
The Velammal team defeated schools from Mongolia, Hungary, Austria, USA, two teams from Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan to remain unbeaten across eight rounds.
The tournament saw participation from over 250 players and 55 top school teams from around the globe.
