Hyderabad reels under impact of torrential downpour; IMD warns of more rain on August 8

From Uppal in the north to Serilingampally in the west, 16 locations in Hyderabad recorded over 10 cm of rain till 8 a.m. on Friday (August 8, 2025). The Gachibowli area recorded the highest 14 cm of rainfall.

The impact of the torrential downpour over 24 hours left citizens fuming, stranded and helpless as rain water rushed into apartment complexes flooding basements in Manikonda, roads turned into raging pools of water in Filmnagar and Krishnanagar, and marooned shops in Ameerpet area.

Floodgates of Musi river opened

The district administration issued a flood alert and began announcements late in the night asking citizens to stay alert in the downstream areas of the Musi River including near Himayatsagar as two flooodgate were opened to release 695 cusecs of water as the inflows topped 1000 cusecs.

“The GHMC and HYDRA teams are also equally in the field clearing the drains , the trees and electric wires which fall. Of course, there are some points where water gets logged and traffic does not move and no one can do anything about it till the water recedes,” write Hyderabad Commissioner C.V. Anand after monitoring the situation from the Integrated Command and Control Centre. 

At 12.34 a.m., the police officer posted on X, formerly Twitter: “I can only request the public to cooperate during such times and not move out of your homes or offices till the rain stops and thereafter too, unless it is very urgent. This will help reduce the burden on the administration.”

At about the same time, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRA) Commissioner A.V. Ranganath stood at Mankikond junction trying to bring order to the traffic.

“We attended water logging complaints at Raj Bhavan road, Maitrivanam, Praja Bhavan, NIMS in the night. It got cleared after rain stopped. Now we received a call about tree collapse in Yellareddyguda,” informed Nagaraju of HYDRAA working in the 6 a.m. to 2 p.m shift. 

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department forecast at 9 a.m. more rain: “Light to Moderate Rain or Thundershowers at times intense spells accompanied with gusty winds(30-40 kmph) very likely to occur in the city. Hazy conditions are very likely to prevail during morning hours.”
