Thalassery police registered a case against ‘Kodi’ Suni, an accused in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case, for allegedly consuming alcohol in public while being taken to court. Co-accused Muhammed Shafi and Shinoj have also been booked.
The police registered a case suo moto case under section 15(c), 63 of the Kerala Abkari act.
The incident occurred on 17 July, when ‘Kodi’ Suni and others were brought to the Thalassery Additional District Court in connection with the murder of RSS activists Vijith (28) and Shinoj (29). The accused allegedly drank alcohol at a hotel car parking area in Thalassery during dinner while the police was standing guard.
Earlier, Thalassery police had maintained that no complaint had been received and there was no evidence to register a case. They argued the case would not stand without proof of alcohol consumption.
However State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar during a visit to Kannur, had hinted a possibility of taking a case, terming the episode a major embarrassment to the force.
