The Forest Department closed the Puliyancholai eco tourism site situated at the Tiruchi-Namakkal border on Sunday after a sloth bear was found roaming inside the reserve forest located on the boundary of the site.
Local people and field staff of the department spotted the sloth bear on Saturday evening. Although it was moving within the reserve forest, it was decided to close the eco tourism site on Sunday as a precautionary measure, Madhavi Yadav, District Forest Officer, Namakkal, told The Hindu.
The Puliyancholai eco tourism site falls under the territorial limits of the Namakkal Forest Division. Located at the foot of the Kolli hills, Puliyancholai is a major picnic spot known for its serene streams and greenery attracting visitors from Tiruchi, Namakkal, and Salem districts.
Ms. Madhavi Yadav said field-level forest officials were deployed at the eco-tourism site to inform visitors that the spot was closed for one day in view of the movement of the sloth bear. An official team was monitoring the situation, she added.
