A fire broke out at the Perungudi dumpyard on Sunday.
Sidhesh Vinayakumar, a commuter along Perungudi, said, “I noticed thick, black fumes emitting from a waste pile at around 1.40 p.m. on Sunday while passing via the 200 Feet Radial Road and shot a video. I saw one fire brigade entering the premises then.”
“These fumes are toxic as it is mixed waste burning, including plastic, all which contain harmful chemicals. This is why living close to the dumpyard in Pallikarani or Perungudi is tough,” he added.
The last incident of fire reported in the dumpyard was on May 15.
Burning smell
According to the Federation of OMR Resident Associations (FOMRRA), there has been a persistent burning smell around the area, mainly due to constant garbage burning within private premises like a school in Perungudi. The issue was raised with officials, but no action has been taken so far on those setting trash ablaze, he claimed.
Joint Commissioner (Health) V.P. Jeyaseelan said five fire tenders have been sent to the site and are attending to the situation. The reason for the smoke and fire will be ascertained as soon as possible.
