Several teams of officials from Income Tax Department were conducting searches on the offices and residences of leading fireworks manufacturers and offices of two transport operators involved in transporting fireworks goods to different parts of the country, here on Monday.

The teams, comprising officials from Chennai and Madurai, started the surprise check amidst police protection, at different places at around noon and the exercise was under way till late in the evening in the office and residence of some office-bearers of Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers’ Association and premises related to their businesses.

The details of searches were yet to be made official by the Income Tax Department. However, the searches have come during the peak marketing period of fireworks goods ahead of the Deepavali season.

Production of fireworks goods is peaking in Sivakasi, the fireworks hub of the country, with just little over two months left for the festival of lights.

Placing of orders by distributors and dealers from across the country surges during this period. Simultaneously, the movement of fireworks goods to far-off States also picks up ahead of the festival season.

The officials were verifying the documents at two lorry sheds from where the fireworks goods are transported.
