The Ernakulam Rural police arrested four persons reportedly with 10 kilograms of suspected ganja from Vattakkattupady near Perumbavoor in the early hours of Wednesday.
The arrested are Paderippada Seetharam Digal, 43, Pola Digal, 45, Jimmy Digal, 38, and Renjith Digal, 55, all from Odisha. A special squad of the Perumbavoor Assistant Superintendent of Police made the seizure on a tip-off received by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) M. Hemalatha.
Reportedly, they smuggled in suspected ganja from Odisha to Aluva by train. From there they reached the Perumbavoor KSRTC bus stand. They were on their way to their rented house at Vattakkattupady in an autorickshaw when they were intercepted by the police team.
The accused had been under surveillance for some time. Seetharam and Pola are siblings and the other two their wives. According to the police, the accused used to sell ganja bought in Odisha for ₹3,000 a kilogram for ₹25,000 here and then left with the proceeds.
They used to visit Kerala once or twice every month and had even rented a house at Vattakkattupady to avert suspicion. They created the impression that they worked in a plywood company, the police said.
Further probe is under way.
