Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa on Monday promised to take back an order that penalises teachers and aided school management over low grades attained by students in SSLC.
BJP member S.V. Sankanur pointed out that teachers and management of aided schools were being punished for low grades. He said that the teachers lose an increment if the pass percentage is less than 60%, and if results are less than 50% for five consecutive years, the aid would be cut by 50%.
“Do parents and the government have no responsibility for the results? How was the benchmark fixed? In the last 10 years, the government has not allowed the filling of vacancies in teaching posts in aided institutions.”
According to the Minister, the rules were brought in 2019. “I do not know why this rule was brought in. After a discussion on the issue, I have asked the officials to withdraw it. The rules should not affect teachers. We should concentrate on teachers’ recruitment.”
He further said that the recruitment of teachers has been cleared for vacancies till 2020, and steps are being taken to fill vacancies between 2020 and 2025. A meeting of elected representatives has been convened on Wednesday to discuss these issues.
