The mysterious death of a 24-year-old youth identified as Saravanan, son of Magudeeswaran of Thumbalapatti in Keeranur police station in Dindigul district, sparked a controversy as the family members and relatives staged a demonstration in front of the Government Medical College and Hospital here on Monday.
Police said that Saravanan, who was working in the private brick-kiln unit in Dindigul district, was posted to Coimbatore unit recently.
Enquiries revealed that he had an affair with a 17-year-old girl, a native of Odisha, who worked in the unit with her family.
It is said that Saravanan had come home two days ago and had met the girl in the brick-kiln unit on Saturday night.
According to the CCTV footage and the confessions by some workers, there was a wordy altercation between Saravanan and the teenaged girl on Saturday night. Though they were initially unaware of the reason, the news that Saravanan was found dead spread on Sunday morning.
Police sent the body for post-mortem.
A press release issued by the police department on Monday stated that the initial probe suggested that it was a love affair between Saravanan and the teenaged girl. After examining the suspects, the police have detained the teenaged girl, her sister and father for further probe.
Denying media reports about the murder, the police clarified that it was a love affair between two persons. Further investigation is on.
