Finishing touches are under way on the new bridge built across the Cauvery between Nerur in Karur district and Unniyur in Tiruchi district.

A new bridge built across the Cauvery between Nerur in Karur district and Unniyur in Tiruchi district is expected to be declared open soon.

The State Highways Department (Projects Wing) has almost completed the construction of bridge, but for the road furniture.

The construction of the bridge would bring big relief to residents on either side of the river as it would ease their commute. Unniyur is situated about four km from Kattuputhur in Tiruchi district and Nerur is about 11 km from Karur. Residents of the villages have to travel about 30 km to reach the other side of the river. The construction of the bridge would now reduce the travel time drastically for them.

Devotees visiting Sri Sadasiva Brahmendral Adhishtanam located at Nerur would also benefit by the construction of the bridge.

The high-level bridge is about 1.1-km long with 26 spans. The overall width of the bridge is 12.90 metres including pavements on both sides. The bridge was sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹101.30 crore.

The bridge would significantly improve road connectivity in the region, and the travel time between Tiruchi and Karur and between Karur and Chennai would come down significantly once the bridge is opened to traffic, Highways Department officials said.

“Black topping of the road surface atop the bridge has been completed. Road furniture and lighting works are under way. They will be completed within the next few days and the bridge will be opened soon,” sources in the Department told The Hindu.
