A six-year-old child from Ghana underwent a successful open heart surgery at the State-run Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bengaluru.

The male child, Jaden Nyhiraba Acheampong, was brought to the hospital with symptoms of chest pain and dyspnea. He was diagnosed with right ventricular outflow obstruction (RVOT). Earlier, the child had undergone non-surgical device closure of Ventricular Septal Defect in Ghana.

With lack of adequate facilities in Ghana for such complex heart surgery, the parents were advised to take the child to Jayadeva institute. Rotary International from Ghana contacted Bangalore Rotary International District 3190 and Rotary Needy Heart Foundation for help to get the surgery done in Bengaluru. The surgery was done free of cost by the institute with a partial amount paid by Rotary Club.

The child was admitted on July 23. A team of doctors comprising Jayaranganath, Professor of Pediatric Cardiology, P.K. Sunil, Vascular Surgeon, and other doctors conducted the heart surgery on July 29. He was discharged from the hospital on August 8 in a hemodynamically stable condition, doctors said.

According to Jayadeva Director K. S. Ravindranath, nearly 10 out of every 1,000 babies are born with complex congenital disease more commonly in the form Tetralogy of Fallot, Heart Holes, or narrowing of the valves. The usual symptoms of retardation of heart holes are fever, recurrent cough, common cold, pneumonia, growth and bluish discoloration of skin and nails, and poor weight gain, he said.
