Residents of Hassan stage protest condemning gang rape

The residents of Hassan staged a protest in Hassan on Wednesday condemning the recent gang rape of a mentally challenged woman.

Hundreds of people took out the protest march under the banner of Hassan Zilla Muslim Sanghatanegala Okkuta in the city. Along the march they raised slogans against perpetrators of the crime and demanded maximum punishment.

The protesters, who gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, said that the incident left them in shock. The police did arrest the accused within a short period. However, they should ensure the accused gets maximum punishment, they said.

Besides that, the police should take strict measures to stop the sale of ganja in the city. They demanded a compensation of ₹25 lakh to the survivor and urged the government to appoint a special prosecutor to handle the case.

A mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by a gang in Hassan recently. The accused allegedly videographed their act and circulated the clip via mobile phones. Pension Mohalla police registered the case on August 8 and arrested three accused.

Leaders of the forum Syed Yusuf, Syed Ansar, Anshad Palya, Mubashir, CITU leader Dharmesh, writer Rupa Hassan and others took part in the protest.
