After a hot muggy Independence Day, the skies opened up on Friday evening around 9 p.m. in Hyderabad. Hours before the rain began, at 7.44 p.m., the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for three hours: “Moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers with intense spells over the GHMC area forecast for next couple of hours.”
There was blinding rain in Alwal, Suchitra Junction, Lothukunta, Bolarum for over an hour as HYDRAA teams stationed strategically on the roads with pumps began to pump out flood waters from water logging points in the northern parts of the city. By 11 p.m., when the rain eased off Kukatpally recorded 6.6 cm, Qutbullapur 6 cm, Shapur Nagar 5.7 cm and Adarshnagar 5.5 cm. while Begumpet recorded 4.5 cm in central Hyderabad.
