Donning the mantle of a midwife, a police constable in Tiruppur on patrol duty along Tirumuruganpoondi Ring Road in the intervening night of Thursday-Friday saw through delivery of a baby for a woman in extreme labour pain, in an autorickshaw, in a situation of urgency.

Bharathi of Odisha was proceeding to the ESI Hospital in Tirumuruganpoondi in an autorickshaw when the constable Kolika found the former screaming in pain.

The woman was soon delivered of a female baby inside the autorickshaw. The umbilical cord was subsequently removed at the hospital. Both the mother and the baby were in good health, hospital sources said.

It later came to light that Kokila’s earlier stint as a nurse had come in handy for saving the lives of the mother and child without loss of time.

Commissioner of Police, Tiruppur City, Rajendran, invited Kokila and felicitated her.
