Stalled project

The ESIC hospital planned to be constructed in Kanniyakumari district must not be delayed. Although sufficient funds were allocated back in 2012, the land acquisition remains stalled. The State government and district administration should expedite the land acquisition drive and enable seamless construction process, thus benefitting employees from the district with medical aids at a subsidized cost.

Overcrowded ferry

Overcrowding and lack of safety measures have raised serious concerns on a ferry service in Kanniyakumari, where passengers were loaded beyond the permitted seating capacity. Despite a signboard warning “Do not stand when the boat is moving,” commuters were allowed to stand just like the crowded town bus.

Life jackets were found lying unused underfoot, with no instructions given to passengers to wear them. Experts warn that such negligence could turn disastrous if a large wave strikes the vessel. Responsibility lies with the shipping corporation to ensure passenger safety, while local authorities must conduct daily inspections to prevent unsafe operations.

Abandoned project?

A site opposite the MGR Bus stand on Thiruvananthapuram Road in Tirunelveli was earmarked for the construction of an omni bus stand. While initial work had begun, operations of city buses were briefly shifted to the space, during the smart city project works at MGR Bus stand. However the designated site now lies overgrown with bushes.

The fate of the project remains unclear and no quotations linger as to why omni buses are not operating from the location, which would have been more convenient for the public. Residents are eager to know whether the work will resume or if the plan has been abandoned altogether.

Welcoming initiative

The mandatory registration of mental health institutions in Thoothukudi with Tamil Nadu Mental Health Commission is a right step by the district administration to have better scrutiny over their functioning. With incidents of rehabilitants being assaulted leading to fatalities at times, this procedure would specify strict guidelines for caretakers and clamp down unrecognised centres.
