A 42-year-old man jumped into the Musi River from the Chaderghat bridge on Monday evening and was swept away by strong currents triggered by continuous rainfall. The Kachiguda police booked a case.
The victim, identified as Mandugula Kiran Goud, parked his two-wheeler, on the bridge before leaping into the river at around 5.30 p.m. Police said his body has not yet been traced, and search operations with the help of frogmen divers have been launched, said the Inspector of Kachiguda police, T. Jyothsna.
“Goud, a resident of the city, lost his wife to cancer four years ago and had reportedly been struggling with depression since her death. He is survived by two sons, aged 18 and 20,” said the officer.
The Kachiguda police booked a missing case and said the currents were too strong for the search to yield immediate results. “We have identified the victim and rescue teams are engaged in locating him,” the officer said.
The incident drew several onlookers to the bridge as rescue personnel battled heavy flow in the river. Police have advised caution as water levels in the Musi remain high due to the recent rains.
