A 43-year-old handloom worker died after contracting rabies following a dog bite in the district on Monday (August 18, 2025).

The deceased has been identified as Kuppusamy from Konganapuram. About three months ago, his pet dog had bitten several people in the locality. When Kuppusamy tried to beat the dog, it bit him on his leg. He did not take any vaccination at the time.

Over the past two days, he was unable to drink water and began exhibiting abnormal behaviour, showing symptoms of rabies. He was first taken to a private hospital, where doctors confirmed the infection, and was later admitted to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem. Despite treatment, he died on Monday.
