The Greater Chennai Corporation and the Railways will expedite the work on flyover projects in flood prone areas to prepare for the northeast monsoon this year.
At a coordination committee meeting on Monday chaired by Chief Secretary N.Muruganandam, officials of various civic agencies agreed to expedite the work ahead of the onset of the northeast monsoon this year.
Residents had complained the work on construction of the Ganesapuram flyover has been delayed, pointing to the risk of civic issues in north Chennai during the northeast monsoon in the event of a delay in completion of the work.
According to GCC officials, the work is expected to be completed in October ahead of the northeast monsoon. During the inspection by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during the northeast monsoon in 2024, officials announced that they will complete the work in April 2025. However, the work has been delayed owing to safety precautions taken by the Railways while implementing the work across the railway tracks. The flood mitigation project near the Ganesapuram bridge, including a box culvert across the railway tracks, is crucial for monsoon preparedness this year.
GCC has completed 90% of the work, constructing 19 out of 20 spans of the Manali Bridge constructed across LC 2B. The Railways has completed one out of the three spans in its stretch, said an official.
“Railways will complete work on Manali bridge in August. GCC will complete the work in September,” said an official. GCC has invited tenders for the rail-over-bridge on Ennore High Road across LC 2A. The Railways is expected to issue a work order for its stretch in two weeks. “The bridge across LC 2A will be completed in 18 months,” said an official. Following the work on LC 2A, GCC intends to start work on a bridge near Korukkupet Railway Station across LC 2. The bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion in north Chennai.
