The architectural beauty of the iconic gopurams of the Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy temple is set to enhance with the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department deciding to illuminate the ‘gopurams’ and ‘vimanams’ soon.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin through video conference from Chennai on Friday launched the work of providing “architectural facade illumination” to the ‘gopurams’ and ‘vimanas’ at the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple.

The illumination work is to be executed at a total cost of ₹8.75 crore using temple funds. The State government had issued an order in October 2024 providing administrative and financial sanction for the work of illuminating the gopurams and vimanams of the Srirangam temple.

Temple authorities expect the illumination works to be completed in four months. The gopurams and vimanams would be illuminated with multi-colour decorative lights during night to enhance the beauty of the iconic temple towers. The Srirangam temple is the foremost among the 108 ‘Divya Desams’ attracting devotees all through the year from various parts of the country. On the southern side of the temple is the majestic Rajagopuram.

A formal function was organised at the thousand pillar mandapam inside the sprawling temple complex after the Chief Minister launched the works through video conference on Friday morning.  The Srirangam MLA M. Palaniyandi, the temple’s Joint Commissioner / Executive Officer S. Sivaramkumar and temple staff participated.
