V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi achieved a new milestone with the export of 101 windmill blades in a ship on Thursday (August 21), a statement issued by the port said.
According to the statement, this achievement surpassed the earlier record of 75 blades exported on March 25.
Through this significant export, the port had recorded a total handling of 1,158 windmill blades so far in the fiscal year 2025-2026. This was an increase of 5% over the corresponding period in the last fiscal, when 1,109 blades were handled.
Each blade measured 59.18 metres in length, requiring specialised handling and dedicated storage arrangements. The port had made specialised infrastructure, including a dedicated storage area of one lakh square metres within the custom-notified area, for accommodating such over-dimensional cargo.
Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, V.O.C. Port Authority, said the handling and export of 101 windmill blades in a single ship reflected the port’s efficiency, capability and commitment in supporting India’s renewable energy mission.
