Cycling groups in Bengaluru have gone beyond the phase of being stress busters or health booster options, they also help build a community of individuals with similar passions. From breakfast rides and races to marathons and more, these groups foster a sense of belonging in a big city when one is away from home.
“These groups comprise cyclists who post their achievements on common platforms. They organise events on a regular basis where they congratulate, motivate and recognise those who reach various milestones in their journey,” says Priya Porwal, cyclist and a member of multiple cycle groups in the city, including the Horamavu Cycling Club and Spokeswomen Club.
Most members have had a chance to visit different parts of the city, courtesy group rides and other cycling activities. Aditya Kashyap, who was introduced to a cycle group through a sporting store, says, “We get updates about rides on our messaging group, usually a couple of days in advance. We meet up at a common point and cycle together from there.”
Cycling away from the city is equivalent to spending time with Nature, Aditya adds. “Meeting new people and forming a community is a huge plus.”
“One of the major benefits of being part of such a community is the motivation you receive. Besides, if you are a new cyclist, watching other members share their achievements and experiences motivates you too,” adds Priya.
Heyram Kruthik, a final year college student, adds that these groups educate beginners about the rules and risks of cycling in a city. “Even if you know how to ride a bicycle, a cyclist learns a lot through group sessions which cover areas such as signs to be followed, preparing for long distance rides, requisite clothing, recovery after an injury and more.”

Vidya Chandran, founder of SpokesWomen, an all-women cycling group in the city, says it is a low impact activity in terms of injury. “A lot of people take up cycling after they’ve been injured in some way. It is also one of the easiest fitness activity to pick up — all you need is a bicycle.”
A cyclist with the Bangalore Cycling Club, Pavan Madhusudhan adds, “Cycling is a low intensity workout. Even if you have undergone disc injuries or surgery or suffer from imbalances in blood sugar or cholesterol, you can take up cycling for physical and mental wellbeing.”
Cycling groups abound in every part of the city including Whitefield, Electronic City, Central Bengaluru, Bannerghatta and Horamavu, and most riders are able to find one that suits their interest and fitness levels. Arun Sivanesan, a member of the Horamavu Cycling Squad says, “We have a few riders in our group who go for endurance cycling, covering anywhere between 300-1200 kms per ride.”
