The first day of the Monsoon Session of the Haryana Legislative Assembly on Friday was overshadowed by mayhem and multiple adjournments as Opposition Congress MLAs demanded an urgent discussion on the issue of prevailing law and order situation in the State even as Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the government was ready for the deliberations.

Soon after the obituary references, the Congress MLAs, led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, urged an adjournment motion to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation against the backdrop of the death of a 19-year-old schoolteacher under mysterious circumstances in Bhiwani a week ago. Her body was found in a field in Bhiwani on August 13. She had gone missing on August 11 after visiting a nursing college to enquire about admission.

Congress members entered the well of the House holding posters that questioned the effectiveness of the BJP’s flagship ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. They demanded an immediate discussion on law and order situation before taking up any other business in the House.

Mr. Saini said the government was willing to discuss and answer all questions on the issue. The Congress members, however, were adamant on adjournment motion to be allowed first.

Mr. Saini criticised the party, saying it should stop politicising the case. He said the Opposition is trying to mislead the public by creating unnecessary uproar. The police, he said, acted promptly and strict action has been taken against the culprits.

“There is a huge difference between the Congress rule and the present BJP government. Under Congress, the law and order situation was worse. Even FIRs were not filed, forcing victims to run from pillar to post. But today swift action is taken without delay,” he said. Speaker Harvinder Kalyan adjourned the House multiple times in a bid to restore order, and later convened an all party meeting. Eventually, the Congress’s adjournment motion was accepted and the Speaker allowed a discussion on the issue on August 26.
