All 98 corporators of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), irrespective of their political affiliations, unanimously passed a resolution in the Council meeting on Friday against the alleged move to privatise the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP).
Saying that the resolution would be submitted to the Centre through the State government, the corporators demanded the withdrawal of the disinvestment of RINL-VSP notified in 2021, and the Expression of Interest (EoI) called from private agencies for the operation and maintenance of 44 wings of the VSP.
“After these demands raised by the YSRCP, CPI and CPI(M), the corporators belonging to the ruling parties such as TDP, BJP and JSP also supported the move. All 98 corporators passed a resolution against any activity harming the interests of the VSP and its workers,” GVMC 44th Ward Corporator and YSRCP Floor Leader Banala Srinivasa Rao said.
GVMC Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao said, “We will include the VSP issue in the corporation’s agenda and will bring it to the notice of the Centre through State government.”
Meanwhile, BJP Visakhapatnam North MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju said that notifications for EoIs have been issued for 44 departments of the VSP for a comprehensive contract system to streamline the operations. “It is not for the privatisation of the plant,” he asserted.
Later, the council members discussed 84 issues of the 151 notified in the agenda in the presence of the Mayor and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg.
Barring a few, almost all were approved by the GVMC Council, a release said.
